New presidents take over Indiana colleges

The Associated Press

There's a changing of the guard at six Indiana colleges, where new presidents have begun the school year busily acquainting themselves with students, faculty and donors.

Replacing three of seven public university leaders at the same time is an unprecedented change.

Martin Jischke, 59, at Purdue; Blaine Brownell, 57, at Ball State; and Lloyd Benjamin III, 56, at Indiana State took over the reins during the summer.

The three other colleges with new presidents are private schools. Meanwhile, the search is on to replace Phillip M. Summers, who is retiring at Vincennes University after 20 years.

“With all the new presidents at Indiana, all of us feel an enormous need to meet and greet so many different constituencies,” Mr. Brownell said. “We've spent a lot of time in receiving lines.”

Though the six colleges range from large public institutions to tiny, private Taylor University in Upland, all but one of the new leaders fit the mold of the typical university president: male, white, 58 years old.

The sole exception is interim Butler President Gwen A. Fountain, who was appointed in April as the school's first female leader in its 145-year history.

The two other new presidents are David J. Gyertson, 53, who took over at Christian-based Taylor University; and Earl D. Brooks II, 44, the new head of Tri-State University in Angola.
