PERSONAL TRAINER

Try swimming, cycling after hip replacement surgery

By David Patania

Question: I had hip replacement surgery five years ago and have trouble walking a great distance. Do you recommend Nautilus equipment, walking or what?

Answer: I would recommend that you participate in activities such as swimming and low-resistance bicycling or stationary cycling that do not place too much stress on the hip joint.

Don't restrict yourself to those activities, work with your doctor and choose any number of activities that you will enjoy and that won't jeopardize the stability of your hip.

I highly recommend working with weights. This will ensure total body conditioning and strength. Just stay away from exercises such as heavy squat or leg press motions that may aggravate your repaired hip. A physical therapist or personal trainer can design a strength program for you that will keep you strong yet avoid pain or re-injury.

With consistent correspondence with your doctor, hard work and ample rest, nothing should prevent you from enjoying an active lifestyle.

Another tip is to keep up with “maintenance.” This means that you should ice the hip area for a few minutes after vigorous exercise and give it rest when you feel fit. Getting a professional massage once or twice a month is a good idea, too.

Taking the time to do little things like that will go a long way in enjoying activity, giving you peace of mind and avoiding re-injury.

Dave Patania, a certified personal trainer, welcomes your questions at davpatania@aol.com.
