Speed limit is 55 mph when no sign
QUESTION: Irwin-Simpson Road between Butler-Warren and Snider roads in Deerfield Township has no posted speed limit. People told me the speed limit is 55 mph if not posted. Is that correct? This section of Irwin-Simpson has a blind dip at the entrance to the Charleston Park subdivision. There have been serious accidents there because of visibility problems and high speed. Can hidden drive caution signs be placed in both directions from the dip, and a reasonable speed limit be imposed? - Al Danis, Deerfield Township
ANSWER: The state speed limit for nonposted roads is 55 mph, Warren County Engineer Neil Tunison said. His department will inspect the area to determine whether warning signs are warranted near the Charleston Park subdivision. Changing the speed is more complicated. In unincorporated areas, county and township officials must comply with state law to reduce speed limits. That requires a detailed study including traffic counts, accident rates, the number of side streets and driveways, and physical characteristics of an area, Mr. Tunison said. The study, with any recommendations for traffic control devices, must be submitted to the state for approval. County officials will consult with Deerfield Township trustees to determine the need for a study.
Q: When the bus stop at West Clifton and Klotter avenues was changed from the south to north side of the streets, additional parking spaces were added at the location of the former bus stop. Cars parked in these spaces competely obscure the view of traffic coming up West Clifton. This is dangerous to motorists coming from Klotter onto West Clifton. Is there any possibility parking spaces could be eliminated from West Clifton at the south corner of Klotter? Barbara Coleman, Clifton
A: Mr. Bailey said a work order has been submitted to eliminate the two parking spaces at this location. The change should be completed in three weeks.
