Flower show celebrates autumn, plants holiday seeds

        The Cincinnati Horticultural Society invites Tristate nature lovers to savor “Fall in the Garden” during the annual fall flower show next weekend at Coney Island. The colorful harvest celebration will showcase the best of the blooming-bright colors, eye-opening scents and mouth-watering flavors that are autumn in the Tristate.

        Among guest speakers will be Libbey Oliver, author of several books, including Williamsburg Christmas and Flowers are Almost Forever. Ms. Oliver, who was the flower arranger at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia for 23 years, will discuss “Prelude to the Holidays.”

        “I will talk about seasonal decorating, from now — with the flowers still remaining — to decorating for the holidays,” Ms. Oliver said during a phone interview. “You can use things like fresh flowers, gourds and peppers — dried material used in the past — to make a beautiful setting for the 21st century.

        “Williamsburg decorating is so simple yet elegant,” she says. “You can make it adaptable to today's living and make it your style.”

        Ms. Oliver stresses the importance of introducing the tradition of holiday decorating to children.

        “Children are an excellent reason to use fresh things to decorate,” she says. “Many people will remember the smells of the season, like using a fresh wreath, live roping and garland.”

        Other speakers will include Felder Rushing, author of Scarecrows, who will tell scarecrow stories with a little help from his “friends” at 1 p.m. next Saturday, and chef Stephen Adams and kitchen gardener Eli Herman of the Biltmore Estate near Asheville, N.C., who will present a culinary demonstration at 1 p.m. Sept. 24.

        Special events will include “Plant Exchange Day,” 8-11 a.m. next Saturday and “Ask the Experts” panels at 11 a.m. both days.

        Activities will include:

        • Scores of floral exhibits, including a 100-bloom arrangement by the Ohio Valley Dahlia Association and an authentic Bonsai garden by the Bonsai Society of Greater Cincinnati.

        • Chef's Market, with more than 100 varieties of apples, exotic mushrooms, gourmet jams and jellies, oils and more.

        • Cottage Market, with dozens of hand-crafted collectibles.

        • Plant Market, featuring top native tree seedlings, more than 300 varieties of daffodils, hardy perennials and the area's best assortment of annual pansies.

        • Kids can enjoy hayrides, a straw maze, a “good bugs” exhibit, free seedlings and a baking workshop.

        Special exhibits will include:

        • “When Scarecrows Dream,” a display of whimsical and imaginative harvest figures.

        • “Window Scapes,” dramatically adorned windows with a view.

        • “Enchanted Entrances,” highlighting the doors of Greater Cincinnati.

        • “Avant Gourds,” featuring gourds intricately carved and elaboratively painted by local artisans.

        • A feng shui garden designed by Dawn Schwartzman of ISI, the Feng Shui Annex and Tim Young of the Delhi Flower & Garden Center.

        • Natural bird habitat designed by Marvin's Organic Garden and artisan Brenda Dimetriou.

        • Floral quilt and wall hanging display sponsored by the Ohio Valley Quilters Guild.

        • A horticultural photography competition for amateur shutterbugs.
