Bombers lose state's top-ranked team
By John Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
With last year's 50-33 loss to St. Xavier still fresh in the minds of Cleveland St. Ignatius' players, Ignatius handed the Bombers a 29-10 loss Saturday afternoon at St. Xavier High School.
St. Ignatius entered the game ranked No.1 in Ohio and No.3 in the country in the Fox Fab 50 National poll.
We talked about last year. In my mind they were the best team in the state, St. Ignatius coach Chuck Kyle said of St. Xavier. We learned from last year and have progressed since then.
St. Ignatius used a big-play offense led by quarterback Bryan Panteck to build a 22-7 halftime lead.
The Wildcats went straight to the air against a young St. Xavier secondary. St. Ignatius passed on all six plays of its first drive, resulting in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Panteck to Matt Miller.
We decided we would come out throwing early. Conditions were ideal for passing and we managed to get in a flow early, Kyle said.
St. Ignatius scored on two more passing plays in the half. With 3:29 remaining in the first quarter, Panteck found Jonathan Gannon for a 12-yard score, and in the second quarter Panteck hit Gannon again, this time for 33 yards.
Defensively, St. Ignatius used a steady diet of blitzes to keep St. Xavier junior quarterback Marty Mooney offbalance. The Wildcats racked up seven sacks, including four by preseason All-American Pat Massey.
The offensive line must do a better job. Mooney took a lot of shots today, St. Xavier coach Steve Rasso said.
The Bombers had their chances to stay in the game, but for the second straight week, key drives stalled in the red zone. St. Xavier drove inside St. Ignatius' 20 four times but managed just 10 points.
You have to score when you get that close. But a lot of credit goes to their defense. They played well, Rasso said.
For the game, St. Ignatius outgained the Bombers 311-231. Panteck completed 13-of-23 passes for 275 yards. Gannon was on the receiving end of eight passes for 195 yards.
