Kroger moves to TPC in '02
By John Erardi
The Cincinnati Enquirer
MASON The Kroger Senior Classic is moving to the Tournament Players Club at River's Bend, seven miles up the road, for 2002.
There was never any question that the TPC course, which is opening in the spring, was going to land a tournament. The only question was which one, and it was logical that the senior tournament would go there after a largely successful 12-year run at The Golf Center at Kings Island.
I look at the TPC course not unlike Paul Brown Stadium, said Bob Hodge, Kroger president of the Cincinnati-Dayton marketing area. Particularly the first few years we move out there, there are going to be huge crowds. I think it's going to be an exciting new place, and it's where we ought to be to continue to rejuvenate this tourna ment.
All of the details have not been worked out, but it is expected to be a three- or five-year contract between the company that runs the senior event here, Kroger and the TPC.
There will be a press conference at the TPC club at 2 p.m. today.
The TPC course, which was designed by Arnold Palmer, has received glowing early reviews. It has been favorably compared to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Course outside Columbus that is rated by many publications as one of the top 20 courses in the world, and which hosts a PGA Tour event.
There had been some talk a couple of years ago that the tournament was going to be moved (to Triple Crown Country Club in Northern Kentucky) ... but this (Kings Island) has been a good golf course for us, Hodge said.
