Ky. Cup winner eyes Breeders' Cup Classic
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Captain Steve, half-length winner over favorite Golden Missile in Saturday's Grade II $500,000 Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway, was vanned to Churchill Downs Sunday.
The 3-year-old son of Fly So Free will prepare for the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic in Lousiville Nov. 4.
Captain Steve gave trainer Bob Baffert his third Kentucky Cup Classic victory, joining Semoran in 1997 and Silver Charm's dead-heat win in 1998.He's turned into a man, Baffert said. He's back to where he was as a 2-year-old.
Captain Steve, named for Louisville police Captain Steve Thompson, who once helped owner Mike Pegram out of a jam, increased his career earnings to almost $2 million.
Baffert also won the $100,000 Kentucky Cup Juvenile, with Point Taken. He plans to run the son of Thunder Gulch in the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland Oct. 8 and then the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Nov. 4 at Churchill.
D. Wayne Lukas-trained Spain, winner of the Turfway Breeders' Cup Saturday, is being pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Golden Missile will run next in the Hawthorne Gold Cup in Chicago Oct. 8 as a final prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic, in which he finished third last year.
