Woman punished for $19K con job

The Associated Press

CANTON, Ohio — A woman who pretended to have cancer was sentenced to one year in prison for accepting nearly $19,000 from fellow church members.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge John Boggins criticized Julie Baker on Wednesday for misleading parishioners at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canton Township for years. He said her false claim of having cancer trivialized the suffering of those who truly fight for their lives.

Judge Boggins said that if Ms. Baker, 36, is granted early release from prison, he will require her to perform community service at a hospice or similar facility that cares for the sick.

Ms. Baker pleaded guilty last month to one count of grand theft. She told police she was broke from a divorce and used the money for personal expenses.

Ms. Baker apologized in court to church and family members.
