Colerain, Indian Hill top polls

Cardinals edge Moeller for No. 1 ranking in Div. I

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Colerain was ranked No.5 in The Enquirer's preseason Division I high school football poll and Indian Hill No.6 in Division II-IV. But both have climbed to the top four weeks into the season.

Tied with Moeller last week for first, Colerain received six of the 10 first place votes to edge the Crusaders by one point (105-104) for sole possession of first place.

“It's flattering to be No.1, but the GMC and GCL are balanced,” Colerain coach Kerry Coombs said. “The city champion usually comes out of these leagues and it's still anybody's ball game.”

Also in Division I, Elder, coming off an impressive 21-14 win over Highlands, moved up one position to No.3, followed by Fairfield and La Salle.

In Division II-IV, Roger Bacon's upset over previously undefeated McNicholas catapulted the Spartans into the No.2 spot while Edgewood, the preseason favorite, dropped to No. 3 following a loss to Miamisburg.

Indian Hill's surge to the top caught coach Kevin Siple by surprise. “Oh my gosh, I don't know if we're No.1,” Siple said. “It's nice to hear that we're in the mix with Roger Bacon and Edgewood, which are two pretty good football teams.”

Colerain and Indian Hill have held opponents to under 100 yards a game, while each offense is putting upmore than 300 yards.

Indian Hill's defense gives up 87.2 yards and its offense is averaging 324.4 yards. “As long as we keep playing defense, we'll be all right,” Siple said.
