SYDNEY, Australia American men's lightweight four rowing team was not expected to medal at the Olympics. But the boat, which includes Wyoming High graduate Greg Ruckman, has advanced to the final on Sunday. Where, Ruckman said, anything can happen.
The emotions, the way the wind blows, who's peaking at the right time. They all can have an effect, said Ruckman. There's nothing like an Olympic final (and) we're definitely gaining momentum.
The top three teams from each of the six-team semifinals qualified for the finals, scheduled for about 8:30 Sunday morning Sydney time. The Americans finished third in their semi, with a time of 6:05.13, behind Australia (6:00.82) and France (6:00.85).
Two other rowers with Cincinnati ties, Kelly Salchow (women's quadruple sculls) and Bryan Volpenhein (men's 8), will also be in the finals Sunday.
