St. X runners to face nation's best

Enquirer news services

When cross country's elite teams gather today in Charlotte, N.C. for the Great American Cross Country Festival, St. Xavier will be among them.

The Bombers will compete in the boys division along with five of the top 10 teams in The Harrier magazine's national poll, including No.1 Houston The Woodlands and No.2 Orem (Utah) Mountain View.

“The best teams in the country are going to be there,” St. Xavier coach Larry Merkel said.

In all, more than 3,500 runners from 380 teams will compete in boys and girls races. The massive event is the brainchild of Rick Hill, a Charlotte real estate developer, who told USA Today, “We want to give runners the same kind of thrill a football player gets on Friday nights.”

The meet helped pay travel expenses for teams far from Charlotte, Merkel said. The Bombers will be led by seniors Andy Weitmarschen, Ryan Busse and Tim King, and juniors Ben Weitmarschen and Jeremy Mosher.
