Saturday's high school highlights


McAuley, Mercy advance at Cincinnati Classic

        McAuley, behind the strong inside play of middle hitters Lisa Kampschmidt and Kristen Rust, beat Louisville Holy Cross and St.Henry Saturday at Mercy High School to win its pool and advance to today's semifinals of the Cincinnati Volleyball Classic.

        McAuley, which beat Holy Cross 15-13, 15-12 and St.Henry 15-7, 15-6, will play Louisville Presentation at 11a.m. today.

        Mercy struggled early in a win over Boone County, dropping the first set 11-15 before winning the next two 15-12, 15-12. Mercy then beat Vandalia Butler 15-13, 15-2, behind Kim Stern's nine kills and eight blocks and Beth Dangel's eight blocks.

        Mercy advances to play Louisville Mercy in today's semifinals.

        BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Princeton won the Friendship Invitational to give coach Ken Meibers his 100th invitational victory.

        Hassan Thompson led the way for Princeton finishing third in 17:20. Eric Zimmerman (17:52) finished ninth and Jay Miller (17:55) tenth for the Vikings.

        GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Colerain continued to roll, easily winning the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota by 84 points.

        Andrea Maas finished fourth for the the Cardinals in 19:20. Terie Littlepage placed sixth in 19:36.

        GIRLS SOCCER: Raechel White, Holly Rosselot and Dawn Thompson each scored as Fayetteville defeated Georgetown 3-0, handing the Lady G-Men their second loss.

        Goalie Tina Wolffram stopped 12 shots for the shutout for Fayetteville (8-1).

        Meghan Ahearn scored with 1:37 to play to give Wyoming a 2-1 win over Lebanon.

        Rite Vogelpohl and Wendy Gamble each scored to give Mercy a 2-0 win over Walnut Hills. Angie Heintz and Maggie Miller combined for four saves in the shutout.

        BOYS SOCCER: Matt Bowman and Steve Ball scored first-half goals to give Loveland a 2-1 win over Anderson in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference.
