PERSONAL TRAINER

Don't let exercise become drudgery

By David Patania

Question: I have decided to pursue looking and feeling good by exercising. I must admit however, that I am not looking forward to sore muscles and boring rides on exercise bikes and treadmills. Is there any hope for me?

Answer: Of course there is hope for you. You did the best thing that you can do at first and that is to make the decision to become active.

The second step is to delete from your mind all the myths that surround getting in shape. A lot of people have the notion that getting in shape means putting on a headband, strapping on ankle weights and doing aerobics to the Village People singing “YMCA.”

Too many people believe that in order to get in shape they have to do things that are painful, restrictive or uninteresting. If you take the time to think about and research activities that you enjoy doing, you'll have a blast getting into shape.

Maybe you were on the swimteam in high school and would like to swim again. Get out there, find a facility, and jump in. Maybe you ran track in college and think you are too old too run. I don't care how old you are, there are running and track and field clubs that accept anyone who has the desire to participate.

If you have never worked out, you will have a great time testing new activities and meeting new people. Get out there and enjoy this thing called life because as we all know, time waits for no one. Fitness is what you make it, so be creative and consistent, and enjoy yourself.

Dave Patania, a certified personal trainer, welcomes your questions at davpatania@aol.com.
