By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

It took until Monday, but Newport Central Catholic officially notched its 14-7 football win over Harrodsburg.

The game ended Saturday with 7:32 left in the third quarter after several delays because of lightning and poor field conditions at Newport Stadium. Louis Stout, Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner, declared NewCath (3-2) the winner.

Junior Steve Eviston led NewCath with 112 yards rushing and a touchdown, and junior quarterback Jeff Smith was 8-of-11 passing for 102 yards and a touchdown to senior Andy Brennenstuhl.

NewCath opens Class A district play Friday at 2 p.m. Saturday against Ludlow at Newport.

        Harrodsburg ....... 7  0  0— 7

        Newport CC ....... 7  7  0—14

H—Carey 27 fumble recovery (Bugg kick)

N—Brennenstuhl 8 pass from Smith (Schumaker kick)
