Little Miami schools have new boss

Ralph Shell had been interim superintendent

By Jennifer Mrozowski
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Little Miami School District has appointed Ralph Shell as its new superintendent.

Mr. Shell had been serving as interim superintendent since Michael C. Virelli retired July 31 as superintendent to become director of support services for the Warren County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

The board chose Mr. Shell partly for his experience with districtwide income taxes instead of the traditional school property tax, said school board President Michael Cremeans.

“But we didn't just pick him because of that,“ Mr. Cremeans said. “We picked him because of his overall experience in the district and in education.”

Mr. Shell has a hefty resume, having served as superintendent of the Preble County Educational Service Center and Goshen Local Schools in Clermont County, as well as business manager for the Ohio Valley Local Schools in Adams County, and an area coordinator for the Ohio Department of Education.

It was in Goshen that Mr. Shell worked to pass an income tax, said board mem ber Bobbie Grice, who worked with Mr. Shell there.

The new superintendent was chosen from a field of 40 people who expressed interest and about 28 who sent applications, Mr. Cremeans said.

Mr. Shell received a two-year contract of 240 days a year making $88,000 annually, said treasurer Barbara Swisher.
