Rains exceed average for September

By Joe Wessels
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Weekend rain drenched the Tristate, pushing the area above the normal September rainfall total and accumulating more than the monthly average in just three days.

From midnight Saturday through midnight Monday, 3.41 inches of rain fell at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, 0.5 inch above the National Climatic Data Center's Sep tember average of 2.91 inches.

Monday alone yielded 2.02 inches of rainfall, bringing this month's total to 4.78 inches. Only traces of precipitation were reported early Tuesday, giving way to clearing skies and a sunny day.

The National Climatic Data Center reported that Septembers in this area have reached a maximum 8.61 inches.

Hamilton received 2.21 inches Monday. On the other hand, Indianapolis, while still wet, received rain totaling only 1.68 inches.

But, the downpours were not connected to other severe weather systems. “It was nothing real exciting,” said Scott Homan, an AccuWeather meteorologist. “Just some rain.”

National Weather Service meteorologist Jeffrey Sites said the rains over the weekend were unrelated to the systems spawning the Xenia, Ohio, tornado.
