Man posts bond in fatal fight case

By Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MIDDLETOWN — A 24-year-old man surrendered Thursday at police headquarters to face a charge in connection with a fight that turned deadly.

Benjamin Stamper of the 1600 block of Smith Avenue posted $25,000 bond after being charged with involuntary manslaughter. His attorney, Frank Schiavone, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Mr. Stamper is accused in the death of Jason Stewart Haines, 26, who died Sunday afternoon at Middletown Re gional Hospital.

Police said Mr. Haines and Mr. Stamper had argued about Mr. Haines' sister, Shannon Haines, then got into a fistfight in the 100 block of Leibee Street.

Witnesses told police that Mr. Stamper punched Mr. Haines in the face. Mr. Haines fell backward off a porch and struck his head.

A police report said Mr. Haines seemed to be intoxicated at the time, but the Butler County Coroner's Office said blood-alcohol test results were not available. The coroner also had not made a ruling in Mr. Haines' death.
