With family and friends looking on, Mr. Barber listened to a judge read 34 charges that accuse him of making inappropriate contact with the girls over the Internet.
Prosecutors say the Finneytown man sent seven girls, ages 12 to 15, sexually explicit material, asked them about their sexual activity and introduced one to a sex chat room.
They say Mr. Barber, 29, met the girls at Princeton Junior High, where he was a popular English teacher. If he is convicted, Mr. Barber faces up to 17 years in prison.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Dinkelacker set Mr. Barber's bond at $250,000. He can be freed from jail by posting $25,000.
If Mr. Barber remains free until his trial, Judge Dinkelacker said, he must not use the Internet or contact the alleged victims. He also is not permitted to teach.
Although no longer employed at Princeton, Mr. Barber had found a new teaching job at the W.E.B. DuBois Academy in Cincinnati. He voluntarily left the school Thursday after his indictment.
