Badin takes sectional golf
By Dave Goldstein
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A nail-biting Division II boys golf high school sectional ended predictably with Greater Catholic League champion Badin walking away on top Thursday.
Purcell Marian fired a 321 but fell one stroke shy as Badin won the sectional for the fourth time in five years and advanced to the district championship for the sixth year in a row.
Madeira junior Joe Misleh and Purcell senior Gus Albers shared individual honors, shooting 3-over-par 75 at Glenview.
With Badin's five golfers, led by Kenny Brunner's 78, already finished, a large, nervous crowd watched the scoreboard waiting for Purcell's final golfer, Scott Schuller, to complete his round. Schuller's 84 meant Badin would win by a stroke.
Badin coach Craig Wilms said he wasn't nervous despite the close finish.
It is not a priority for us to win this tournament, Wilms said. The main thing in an event like this is to qualify for the next week.
Madeira and Wyoming also advanced to next Thursday's district championship at Weatherwax.
Madeira's Misleh was an unlikely medalist. . He started with a double-bogey and a bogey but finished with 16 straight pars.
It was early, I was cold, and I started off kind of shaky, Misleh said.
Matt Amis shot a 79 to lead individuals on non-qualifying teams, four of whom advance to districts. Batavia's Brett Harris, Bethel's Brian Thacker and Indian Hill's Todd Block all shot 80.
