United Way at 29 percent of goal

By Joe Wessels
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Precious time is ticking away in the Greater Cincinnati United Way's $59.6 million campaign.

With a little under four weeks to go, the United Way reports reaching 29 percent of its 2000 goal, or $16.85 million. Fund raising began Sept. 7 and ends Oct. 26.

“We're seeing positive results but need to step up our pace,” said Barbara J. Stonebraker, campaign chairwoman. “So far, corporate giving appears to be solid.”

The United Way campaign supports more than 160 agencies in the TriState, from the YMCA to AIDS education agencies to youth development programs.

Employee giving campaigns have had positive results, United Way officials said. They also reported raising more than $100,000 from new business development and $15,000 from the annual home run derby. The home run derby runs in conjunction with the Cincinnati Reds.
