Boy darts into road, hit by car

The Cincinnati Enquirer

INDEPENDENCE — An 11-year-old boy was in serious condition Tuesday after being struck Monday evening by a vehicle driven by Brendeen Longoria, whose own son died last year in a truck-bicycle crash.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, Mrs. Longoria was westbound in the 500 block of Bristow Road, between Banklick and Independence roads, when Robert T. Spears ran across the street and into the path of her vehicle.

Kenton County Police Capt. Ed Butler said he doesn't expect charges to be filed.

“There was nothing she could do about it. It was an unavoidable accident. It was just a matter of bad circumstances. The boy ran out in the road,” he said.

According to Capt. Butler, Robert, who lives nearby, was on the north side of Bristow Road when an eastbound vehicle passed and he ran across and into the path of Mrs. Longoria's car. She was not speeding in the residential stretch, which has a speed limit of 35 mph, Capt. Butler said.

Mrs. Longoria's son, Joseph Longoria, 12, of Demossville, was riding his bike in the 15000 block of Madison Pike near Piner when two vehicles struck him on Nov. 24, 1999.

Detectives determined that Joseph died from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a truck and then thrown into the path of a car. No charges were filed in that accident.

Robert was taken by helicopter in critical condition to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati. He was upgraded on Tuesday to serious condition.

Mrs. Longoria was not injured. She could not be reached for comment.
