Tristate A.M. Report

Businesses evacuate after chemical leak

WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP — A chemical mixing vat of adhesives leaked fumes Tuesday morning, making four employees of a West Chester Township company ill and forcing the evacuation of a half-dozen other nearby businesses.

The spill occurred shortly before 9 a.m. at the Three Bond International Co., 6184 Schumacher Park Drive, south of the Union Centre Boulevard and Interstate 75 interchange in Butler County.

The four workers, who suffered minor throat irritation and dizziness, were treated and later released from Bethesda North Hospital. As a precaution more than 60 Three Bond employees were evacuated, as were hundreds of other workers from companies along Schumacher Park Drive and a portion of Crescent Park in the Schumacher Commerce Park.

The West Chester Hazardous Materials Unit was investigating the leak, but company officials said preliminary indications point to a defective batch of adhesive chemicals as cause of the fumes.

Armed man robs Salem Twp. bank

SALEM TOWNSHIP — A man wearing a black wig and sunglasses and armed with a handgun robbed the Lebanon Citizens Bank on U.S. 22/Ohio 3 Tuesday morning.

The robber entered the bank in the 6000 block about 10:30 a.m., displayed a handgun, and demanded money, the Warren County Sheriff's Office said. He fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and got into a waiting maroon vehicle — driven by a female — that went east toward Morrow.

The suspect is described as white male in his mid-20s, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall; of slender build; and wearing a demin jacket, checked flannel shirt and white T-shirt.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call sheriff's office's criminal investigations division at 695-1280 or the FBI's Middletown office at 423-8030.

Kidnap charge follows chase

PAINT TOWNSHIP — A traffic stop on U.S. 50 Tuesday afternoon resulted in 25-mile police chase through Highland County after the car fled the scene.

The fleeing driver, who has outstanding warrants from Kentucky, was arrested on Washburn Road after he left the vehicle and ran into a wooded area, the Highland County Sheriff's Office said.

He was captured after a short foot chase.

The driver, William A. Moore, 35, of Flemingsburg, Ky., was charged with kidnapping and failure to comply with a police officer, the sheriff's office said. Mr. Moore has outstanding warrants from Fleming County, Ky., for two counts of interference with custody. The passenger in the car was a 15-year girl who had been reported missing in Morehead, Ky.

The incident begin about 1:15 p.m with a traffic stop on U.S. 50 at Ohio 753 by the trooper from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the sheriff's office said. When the trooper determined the driver had an outstanding warrant, he radioed for assistance to the sheriff's office.

As a sheriff's deputy arrived, the vehicle pulled off, leading pursing deputies on Ohio 753 to Ohio 506.

Boy wanders away from parents' motel

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP — The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident in which a young boy with Down's syndrome wandered away from a motel where his family was staying on Colerain Avenue.

Police said the boy, 5, was found at 10:50 p.m. Monday in the 7400 block of Colerain by a motorist not far from the Suburban Lodge, 7451 Colerain Ave.

Police said the boy slipped out the door. He was taken to Children's Hospital for evaluation, but was in good health.

The boy's parents are Lisa Slattery and Don Stanley, of Cincinnati. Mr. Stanley woke up at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday, police said, discovered the child missing and called police.

The boy is in the custody of Hamilton County officials pending the outcome of the investigation.

Evicted resident accused of arson

MIDDLETOWN — Police said a 52-year-old man was evicted from his apartment, then set fire to the building and tried to interfere with firefighters' work Monday.

Lonnie ""L.C.” Carpenter was charged Tuesday with aggravated arson and misconduct at the scene of an emergency. His court appearance was rescheduled for Friday to give him time to hire a lawyer, officials said. He was being held in the city jail Tuesday.

Firefighters and police were called around 6:15 p.m. Monday to a fire in the 1300 block of Central Avenue, which housed several apartments and a business.

“The fire originated in the rear of the unit that he had occupied,” a news release said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Fire Marshal Steve Ludwig at 425-4996 or Detective John Magill at 425-7741.

Pilot gives warning, lands safely at Lunken

A single-engine plane with one person aboard landed safely Tuesday night at Lunken Airport after the pilot declared an emergency because his cabin power failed and his landing gear indicator went out.

The pilot, an Atlanta man whose name was not available, was flying from Bowling Green, Ky., to Lunken.

His Cessna landed with the landing gear properly deployed.

“He was coming in unsure whether he would be landing on his belly or on his wheels,” said Cincinnati Fire Lt. Dave Robinson.

The airplane was about 40 miles from Lunken when the pilot declared the emergency about 9 p.m., officials said.

Condition serious after fatal fight

The granddaughter charged with killing her grandmother's boyfriend remained hospitalized Tuesday.

Stacy Hill, 18, was listed in serious condition at University Hospital, where she was taken after a verbal and physical altercation with the man, Bruce Reed. Her injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Ms. Hill, her grandmother Regina Hill and Mr. Reed lived together in the same Sutton Avenue apartment in Mount Washington, where the fight and stabbing happened about 1:15 p.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead at Mercy Anderson Hospital shortly after the incident.
