Kenton, Covington receive grants to patrol I-71/75
By James Pilcher
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Kenton County and Covington police departments will remain the primary agencies to patrol Interstates 71/75 inside the I-275 perimeter after receiving federal grants Tuesday in Lexington.
Kenton received $18,500 in a matching grant to pay for overtime to patrol the highway for speeders, while Covington received $144,200 to pay for two full-time officers to enforce traffic throughout the city.
Kenton Police Capt. Ed Butler said the grant helps pay for additional patrol time along the Interstate between Erlanger and Covington. It is a continuation of a grant started in 1993.
Crescent Springs and Fort Mitchell also had applied for the overtime grant but were denied because they participated between 1993-1996 along with other cities such as Fort Wright and Park Hills.
Those cities dropped out when the grant required cities to provide funding for the program as well. Crescent Springs and Fort Mitchell hoped that they could start the process over, but were denied by the Kentucky State Police Department of Traffic Safety.
We have to work the accidents, but we don't have any money for enforcement, Crescent Springs Police Chief Mike Ward said. If that's the way they want it, that's fine with me.
Covington's grant is a continuation of funding first received last year.
Covington Sgt. Neil Gilreath said the two officers patrol I-71/75, but also cover other parts of the city.
