Authorities still are reviewing whether to change the charge against Phillip Sarakatsannis, 32, in light of his mother's death last week.
He is now charged with criminal abuse, a felony that can bring a sentence of one to five years in prison.
Bonnie Sarakatsannis, 69, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She had been there since Sept. 10.
Hospital officials notified police after finding broken bones and severe bedsores.
Detectives learned she had been lying on a sheet on the garage floor for three weeks.
The next hearing was set for Oct. 12.
