Pig Parade: Silky Sow

Pretty pig ready to float in Rose Parade

By Owen Findsen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is 160th in a series spotlighting pigs from the Big Pig Gig Public Art Project taking place in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. Find past pig profiles at cincinnati.com.

Artists: Sally Waxman, Susan Grier, Rhonda Hill, Holly Swisher, Marion Rockwell, Debbie Robbins and Sharon Bubemyre, designers at the Silky Way in Montgomery.

        Sponsor: Silky Way.

This pig's pen: Albert B. Sabin Convention Center, downtown.

You were inspired by: We knew we were going to use silk flowers because that's our business. We decided to make her a little shopper, well, a big shopper.

What's the pig idea? Silky has a tattoo of the Silky Way insignia on her ankle. She has wonderful red lips, long black lashes. She's carrying a red silk purse. She has a red ruffle around her waist and yellow bloomers.

Completing the project took: It took three weeks to sand and prepare it and another week and a half to decorate her.

What's the matter?: We made a dress out of chicken wire and coated the dress with pieces of silk flowers, just like a Rose Parade float.

Your high on the hog was: We decorated the pig on the sidewalk outside of our shop in Montgomery, and people came to watch us work. A number of pig artists came by to watch.

Pig peeve: The amount of time it took.

Best pig tale: One man came by to watch us work and he played harmonica for us while we worked.

What artistic movement most affected the outcome of this pig? We're always coming up with concepts for using silk flowers.

If your pig starred in a movie, who would you cast to play the role? Miss Piggy.
