Second patient dies after treatment at center
The Associated Press
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio A second person has died after becoming ill after treatment at a Youngstown dialysis center in August.
Evelyn Payne, 60, of Youngstown, died Thursday at Forum Health Northside Medical Center. She was one of 20 people hospitalized after being treated at Physicians Dialysis Center Aug. 30.
Lawrence Lingo, 57, of New ton Falls died the day he was treated at the center. One other patient remains in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Autopsies on both Ms. Payne and Mr. Lingo are finished, but results will not be released until after Youngstown health officials complete their investigation, said Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, forensic pathologist for the Trumbull County coroner.
We have to remember that these are people with very serious underlying diseases, Dr. Germaniuk said. But we had a cluster of 18-21 people ill and two who died something caused that cluster.
The dialysis center closed last month after 20 patients suffered nausea, vomiting and chills. It reopened Friday after replacing its water purification system and dialysis machines.
Investigators haven't deter mined the cause of the illnesses.
The center has sent about 100 water samples to an independent lab. The results will be reviewed by Youngstown health officials, the Ohio Department of Health, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure bacteria and chemical levels are within safe limits.
