League races getting clearer
Elder, Wyoming poised to claim titles this week

One and possibly two high school football league championships will be decided Friday with most of the others going down to the wire.
Elder (5-1, 2-0 league) can wrap up the Greater Catholic League South title with a victory over St. Xavier (4-3, 1-1). The Panthers last won the GCL championship in 1996.
We don't want to share the league with anyone, Elder tailback Kyle Koester said following Friday's 21-7 win over Moeller. St. X is huge and we'll have to be ready.
If two-time defending GCL champion St. Xavier prevails, the league will end in a three-way tie, with St. X, Elder and Moeller (6-1, 2-1) sharing the honors.
LaSalle is 3-4, 0-3.
Cincinnati Hills League: If first-place Wyoming (6-1, 5-0) defeats second-place Reading (5-2, 4-1), coach Bernie Barre's Cowboys will claim the league championship.
A Reading victory catapults coach Ken Minor's Blue Devils into a first-place tie with one game remaining. Reading plays Deer Park (0-7, 0-5) and Wyoming meets Indian Hill (5-2, 3-2) the following week.
We haven't won a league championship since 1979 (Hamilton County Suburban), which was my first year at Reading, Minor said.
We've had some good teams but it's been tough. We played in a league with Carlos Snow and CAPE when they were winning state championships. We had to go against those good Mariemont teams and Wyoming when they had Ahmed Plummer and Richard Hall.
Miami Valley Conference: North College Hill (4-3, 4-1) is one victory away from clinching at least a tie for the MVC, which the Trojans haven't won since 1968.
Coach Bruce Baarendse's team plays host to New Miami (4-3, 2-2) on Friday. A NCH victory assures the Trojans of at least a share of the title with Summit Country Day (6-1, 4-1) and Cincinnati Country Day (4-3, 3-1), if SCD and CCD win their remaining league games.
Queen City Conference: First-place Western Hills (6-1, 5-0) helped its cause by knocking off Withrow (3-4, 3-2) 17-12 last Friday.
With two league games remaining, Western Hills' biggest worry is Walnut Hills (4-3, 4-1).
West Hi plays Mount Healthy (2-5, 2-3) this week and Walnut Hills the following.
Fort Ancient Valley Buckeye: Anderson, Harrison, Glen Este and Winton Woods were crowding the league standings Friday. Saturday morning just Winton Woods (5-2, 4-1) and Anderson (6-1, 4-1) remained on top with two league games left to play.
Harrison, Glen Este, Turpin and Mason all have two league losses.
Who is left on Turpin's schedule? Winton Woods and Anderson.
Fort Ancient Valley Cardinal: Undefeated Lebanon (7-0, 5-0) controls its own destiny in the FAVC Cardinal Division.
The Warriors face Ross (4-3, 2-2) and Norwood (1-6, 0-4) the next two weeks.
Loveland (4-3, 3-1) is in second place.
Greater Miami Conference: Colerain (7-0, 5-0) leads the league, but is trailed by Lakota West (5-2, 4-1) and Princeton (5-2, 4-1) the very two teams that the Cardinals play the next two weeks.
Southern Buckeye Conference: Although undefeated New Richmond (7-0, 3-0) is in the SBC American Division, the Lions will determine the winner of the National Division title.
Since all cross-over games count in the league standings, New Richmond's remaining games against Williamsburg, Batavia and Bethel-Tate, all with one league lose, matter.
Greater Catholic League-North: If McNicholas (6-1, 3-1) defeats Badin next week, the Rams will clinch at least a share of the title. Chaminade-Julienne is also 6-1, 3-1.
Others: Most of the teams in the Mid-Miami League North and South Divisions have only played one league game and it's too early to look at the title races.
