        TV picks: The best show of the night — and possibly the best of the fall season — is Ed, NBC's Northern Exposure-style drama about a lawyer (Tom Cavanagh) who returns to his Ohio hometown and pursues his high school dreams (8 p.m., Channels 5, 22).

        • TV Critic John Kiesewetter suggests taping Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan (at 8 p.m. or 10 p.m., A&E), or watch the musical and tape Ed and The Practice season premiere (10 p.m., Channels 9, 2).
