This is 162nd in a series spotlighting pigs from the Big Pig Gig Public Art Project taking place in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. Find past pig profiles at cincinnati.com.
This sow doesn't hang out at night, but it stays bright.
Artist: Steve McGowan, 36, Milford, vice-president and creative director, FRCH, designed the pig and fabricated it with assistance from designers Michael Chaney and Mark Knoll. FRCH designers created six pigs, including Albert Swinestein, Cured Ham Sandwich, Elvis Pigsley, Reginald, Dressed to the Swines and Media Hog. FRCH is a firm that designs retail stores for clients including Disney, Starbuck and the Discovery Channel.
Sponsor: Cinergy, for the Wellness Community.
This pig's pen: Cinergy lobby, Fourth and Main streets.
You were inspired by: By the ball that falls on Times Square on New Year's Eve and the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas that has the carnival lights on it. My original name was Swinergy, in hopes that Cinergy would buy it.
They did, but they thought the name was too commercial, so they renamed it Watt A Pig!, which is pretty clever. It is a reference to the children's book Charlotte's Web.
What's the pig idea? The original idea was to have it hanging over Fountain Square. That changed, but the idea is to be more of a sign than a sculpture.
You want people to look at this pig and think: It's different from the other pigs because it is in a window and it is lit up all night.
What's the matter? It is highly chromed. It has 150 lights in it. His tail has been replaced with a cord with a plug on the end, so it looks like an appliance.
Your high on the hog was: There's no bottom to a sitting pig. To install the lights we had someone crawl up inside the pig to wire the lights. It made for some funny pictures.
Best pig tale: When Cinergy installed the pig they stripped one of the wires and busted a bulb so it wouldn't light. They called us to fix it and we said, You guys are the electric company! So we sent out a new crew and got it fixed.
My favorite pork dish: Is Spam pork?
What artistic movement most affected the outcome of this pig? Sign design. It's going to be published in Signs of the Times magazine.
The materials cost: $900.
Do you consider this art or porkography? I don't know what porkography is, but I know it when I see it.
