Many in Newport still have no gas
By Joe Wessels
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Just as the Tristate experiences record low temperatures, 2,200 Cinergy customers in Newport remain without natural gas service this morning.
Company officials said Sunday that, even with crews working 16-hour days to repair damage from a gas line rupture Thursday, some customers will not have gas until Wednesday night.
On Sunday, Cinergy revised the total number of customers affected by the outage to 3,700, down from 5,000, and it said gas would be at least partly restored to 1,500 homes, businesses and other buildings by midnight Sunday.
Complicating the repair work: Water in gas lines has spilled into water heaters, stoves, clothes dryers and furnaces, and that water must be blown out of each appliance and line to reestablish service.
The gas line was broken near Newport Shopping Center about 3:30 a.m. Thursday after a water main burst.
Cinergy officials have told residents the company will not be responsible for water damage to in-house appliances.
This is a circumstance that was not caused by any negligence of the company, said Steve Brash, Cinergy spokesman.
At Mansion Hill bar and restaurant, at Fifth and Washington, owner Lou Peluso said Sunday he has lost thousands of dollars.
I took a beating this weekend because people ain't coming, Mr. Peluso said. I can't do any food.
