Suspect fatally shot in struggle

The Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Police shot and killed a man during a struggle with four officers early Sunday.

The man, whose name was not released, was riding in a van matching the description of one that was reported stolen Saturday. An officer followed the van and asked for backup.

The driver of the van — which police said later was not the one officers were looking for — refused to pull over and the passenger began throwing objects out of the back of the van.

The driver turned the van along some railroad tracks on the city's south side and toward a group of warehouses. He stopped and the suspects got out and ran, said Sgt. Earl Smith.

Four officers followed one of the suspects into a warehouse. During a struggle, the suspect grabbed one of the officer's guns and was shot. He died at the scene.

Police have not said which officer fired at the suspect or how many times he was shot. Another man who ran from the van was arrested on outstanding warrants, Sgt. Smith said. His name was not released.
