Jessup Rd. sidewalks on hold

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Question: Recently, asphalt walks on Jessup Road east of White Oak Middle School were reconditioned. All walks on East Jessup are temporary and slated for replacement with the roadway, curbs and sewers. We have been told “next year” for years now. Can you get the straight information on this? — Joe Karaus, White Oak

Answer: The $2.25 million Jessup Road project includes sewers, curbs, widening, intersection improvements and the walks. The existing sidewalks do not comply with state standards, said
Tim Gilday, Hamilton County planning and design engineer. While the project has been designed, money is being sought for the improvements for the section of Jessup from 200 feet east of Cheviot Road to Vogel Road west of the Cincinnati corporation line. Mr Gilday said the project has been submitted for two years running for state grant money from the Ohio Public Works Commission. Submitted projects come from across the state and are ranked annually based on need and available money. The Jessup project was not ranked high enough in either of the past two years. It will be resubmitted for 2001 funding. The county does not have money to float the project without assistance and efforts to secure money will continue until successful, officials said.

Q: We have lived at Robison and Kennedy avenues in Kennedy Heights for 52 years and are taxpayers. Why can't we have curbs when the rest of Robison has curbs? — Ruth Hindersman, Kennedy Heights

A: Joe Vogel, of Cincinnati's department of transportation and engineering, said the neighborhood has created a street improvement committee and city officials are working with that group to develop a street design and plan. As soon as a conceptual plan is completed, the city will seek money for the job that includes the curbs being requested. The project will compete for money with other projects. The earliest it will be placed on the list for possible funding is 2001, Mr. Vogel said.
