Lucas unveils political TV ads

EDGEWOOD With less than a month until Election Day, U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas has unveiled his television advertising campaign to run in the three major media markets of the 4th Congressional District.
The ad, designed to show Mr. Lucas' emphasis on legislation and programs geared toward children, began running Tuesday night on TV stations in Cincinnati, Louisville and West Virginia.
In the ad Mr. Lucas talks about his opposition to abortion, his vote for legislation reducing school class size and his support of health coverage for all children. His grandchildren appear with him.
TV slots must be secured in all three media markets in order to reach voters throughout the 22-county Fourth District, which stretches from Ashland on the Kentucky-West Virginia border to near Louisville and includes all of Northern Kentucky.
Television time is purchased in the Huntington-Charleston market in West Virginia to reach voters in Ashland and the northeastern Kentucky counties Mr. Lucas represents, said Travis Sowders, his campaign manager.
Congressman Lucas has a record that the people of the Fourth District can be proud of, said Mr. Sowders. standing up for working families on education and health care, while defending traditional Kentucky values and maintaining fiscal conservatism.
Oldham County Republican Don Bell, Mr. Lucas' opponent, could not be reached to comment.
He was in Northern Kentucky on Tuesday attending a campaign rally in Grant County, and is scheduled to attend a fund-raiser tonight at the Drawbridge Inn in Fort Mitchell.
It is not known if Mr. Bell will have the money to advertise on TV in the region's major media markets.
Mr. Sowders would not reveal how much money the Lucas campaign has spent on the ads or how often the ads will be broadcast. He did say the campaign plans to run additional ads but would not release the details of those.
The candidates must report their fund-raising by the end of this week.
