Pig Parade: Cured Ham Sandwich

Porker meant to be seen, not eaten

By Owen Findsen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is 165th in a series spotlighting pigs from the Big Pig Gig Public Art Project taking place in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. Find past pig profiles at cincinnati.com.

Here's a pig in a pickle, with lettuce and tomato, too.

Artist: Steve McGowan, 36, Milford, vice-president and creative director at FRCH, designed the pig and fabricated it with assistance from designers Michael Chaney and Mark Knoll. FRCH created five other pigs: Albert Swinestein, Elvis Pigsley, Reginald, Dressed to the Swines and Media Hog.

Sponsor: Margie Rauh, for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

        This pig's pen: Sawyer Point.

You were inspired by: The idea was to do something totally unexpected.

What's the pig idea? A pork sandwich. We put the pig on its side between slices of bread, with an olive on top. The toothpick is what holds it all together.

You want people to look at this pig and think: I wanted something that would give people a big laugh, but making it was a big pain.

Completing the project took: We didn't estimate how difficult this pig was going to be to build. It was basically like building a car, because everything had to be safe and weather resistant. We had to produce the bread, the lettuce, the tomato, olive and toothpick.

What's the matter?: We used foam insulation layered with plywood, covered with resin and bondo. The lettuce and tomato are resin and the olive is a balloon filled with foam insulation. The toothpick is a furniture leg.

Your high on the hog was: I was most proud that MS had selected my pig to represent their cause.

Pig peeve: We were very nervous about about its location near a playground at Sawyer Point. It had to survive Riverfest, the Seafood Festival, Party in the Park. It was in a danger zone. Kids are using it as a teeter totter and somebody stole the olive and the toothpick.

Best pig tale: A friend e-mailed me a picture of the pig at Sawyer Point. There was a woman with her family and her kid in a stroller and the stroller was on top of the sandwich posing for a picture. So much for the “do not touch” signs.

What do you call this pig: The sandwich.

The materials cost: Over budget, about $1,300.
