Newspaper honors 2 area teachers
By Cindy Kranz
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Evelyn Davidson, a biology teacher at Ursuline Academy, and Charlene Charlie Kobida, a retired Sycamore High School math teacher, have received honorable mention in USA Today's third annual All-USA Teacher Team honors.
The awards honor teachers for vision, creativity and ability to inspire the best in their students.
Mrs. Kobida said Thursday she prefers not to tell students too much. She'd rather guide them to discover the answers themselves.
It's nice to be recognized for my efforts because, oftentimes, teachers don't get that recognition, said Mrs. Kobida, who taught math for 29 years 16 of those at Sycamore. She retired in June.
I have high expectations for students, the Glendale woman said. I think all students can learn mathematics. That's not always what students think.
Two panels of educators selected the teachers from among hundreds of nominees. Teachers named to the First Team receive trophies and $2,500 checks for their schools today in Washington, D.C.
We honor these teachers for their vision, creativity and ability to inspire the best in their students said USA Today Editor Karen Jurgensen.
