Baby helps ease dad's grief

Slain woman's husband 'blessed'

By Thomas J. Sheeran
The Associated Press

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio — A man whose pregnant wife was killed moments before their baby was cut from her womb said the joys of new fatherhood help overcome the anguish of his wife's killing.

“Every day is great. Every day I hold him I just smile and it just makes it so much easier throughout all this,” Jonathan Andrews, 23, of Ravenna, said as his 2 1/2-week-old son, Oscar, slept on his right shoulder.

Mr. Andrews spoke at a news conference arranged by the family's attorney in this Cleveland suburb.

Having lost a wife but gained a son, Mr. Andrews said, “You just have to be so blessed. And that's the way I feel.

“I mean, every day is just wonderful with him and it makes it so much easier. I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time with him and being the best dad.”

His wife, Theresa Andrews, 23, disappeared Sept. 27 after telling her husband by phone that they had a prospective buyer for their Jeep.

Her body was found five days later, buried under the dirt floor of the garage of the Ravenna home of Michelle Bica, 39. Mrs. Bica killed herself as police arrived to question her about Mrs. Andrews' disappearance.

The infant was found safe in a crib in Mrs. Bica's home, where the woman apparently planned to raise the baby as her own.

Oscar “is not going to remember anything that happened, and that's great,” Jonathan Andrews said. He said the baby had come through the crude Caesarean section unblemished.

“I'm going to make the best out of what I can with him every day,” Mr. Andrews said.

He said he would be willing to meet with Thomas Bica, who lost his wife to suicide and the baby he thought was his own son.
