Pig Parade: Going for Boaroque

Chamber musician doesn't fiddle around

By Owen Findsen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is 169th in a series spotlighting pigs from the Big Pig Gig Public Art Project taking place in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. Find past pig profiles at Cincinnati.com/bigpiggig

It's Bach in the barnyard; Amadeus in the country; Pigaldi's Four Seasons, played on a Sowdivarius violin.

Artists: Judi Cettel of Mount Adams, and Beth Eline of East Walnut Hills. They are art teachers at Mason High School, where they made this pig. Their students made Ms. Sow Jones, 2000.

Sponsor: Prudential Securities for Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.

This pig's pen: 525 Vine St. lobby, Skywalk level.

You were inspired by: Prudential Securities sponsored our school pig and wanted to do a pig for the Chamber Orchestra. They asked us to do it.

What's the pig idea? He's dressed as a Baroque musician. He has a white wig. His jacket is simulated brocade. He has gold-leaf wings and shoes. He's a pearlized orchid color, with a shocking pink violin. Somebody took the strings and bridge of the violin, so we have to repair it.

You want people to look at this pig and think: About classical music and the Chamber Orchestra.

Completing the project took: Three weeks.

What's the matter?: The Baroque Violin Shop contributed the violin, which had peace symbols pasted all over it before we sanded and repainted it. His jacket and hose glitter with cut glass stones. We didn't use plastic stuff. We used Czech cut stones.

Your high on the hog was: All the people who contributed encouragement, advice and even materials.

Pig peeve: Worrying that our pig might be put outdoors where it would have been damaged. Without being outside, though, you can't see how it glitters in the sunlight.

Best pig tale: We had a place at school to work on the pig, but because of other needs we kept being moved. During the last week, we had the pig in the back of a truck. He had to be hauled out to work on each morning, and every evening he went back to sleep in the truck.

My favorite pork dish: French cassoulet.

What artistic movement most affected the outcome of this pig? Baroque art.

        The materials cost: $1,400.

Do you consider this art or porkography? We're both artists, but as teachers we have little time for our art, so I guess we'll have to be known for our pigs.

If your pig starred in a movie, who would you cast to play the role?: Gerard Depardieu.
