Wozniak here for some Apple talk

NKU forum a magnet for PC legend

By John J. Byczkowski

Steve Wozniak helped make the future. He just doesn't like to talk about it, because more knowledgeable people than he are often wrong.

What, then, surprises him about today? “Every single thing,” he laughs. “I don't think humanity has ever gone through such massive changes in life ... as rapid or as major as have happened here.”

As one who was there at the birth of the PC revolution, does he feel responsible for that? No. “There was a point in time when computer technology became affordable, but a computer people wanted to buy didn't exist,” he said. “I was just a key element to putting together the technology in a much different way than ever before.”

Mr. Wozniak, co-founder of personal computing pioneer Apple Computer, is in Cincinnati to address today's AppleVention 2000 at Northern Kentucky University. He paid his own way here and is taking no speaking fee.

He's 50, wears a digital camera and phone on his belt, and spends much time with kids and computers.

And he's still an Apple employee, evangelist and stockholder. Apple's stock fell from $60 in mid-September to less than $20 on Friday, hurt by less-than-optimistic sales forecasts.

But the man known as Woz to Apple fans believes the company has the right products. “Our stock corrected itself and it's healthier and feels better now,” he said. “It's in a super, justifiable, righteous place.”
