State golf tournament


Lakota West, St. X in title hunt

        Lakota West and St.Xavier remain in contention for the Division I state golf championship after Friday's 18-hole round at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.

        Paced by Roddy Steiger's 79, Lakota West fired a 324, tying with Massillon Jackson for second place, six strokes behind Ashland (318), which also led after last year's first round.

        St.Xavier and Cleveland St.Ignatius are at 325.

        Hamilton's Eddie Baker is in position to capture medalist honors, shooting a 3-over-par 75, one stroke in front of Tom Wirtz from Massillon Jackson. Ashland was led by John Locke's 5-over 77.

        In Division III, Warren John F. Kennedy holds a nine-stroke lead after the first round played over the Gray Course.

        Middletown Fenwick and Summit Country Day are 10th and 12th respectively, well off the pace.

        Colin Clemente led War ren Kennedy with a 1-over- par 71. Wes Homan of Summit Country Day also fired a 71, two strokes behind leaders David Huestis (Gahanna Columbus Academy), Seth Winkle (Kalida) and Justin Kruse (Toledo Ottawa Hills).

        Clemente's Kennedy teammate, Jason Kokrak, was at 72 in a five-way tie for sixth with Phil Rangel of Berlin Hiland, Bill Schaefer of Independence and Tom Ballinger and Bryan Moritz, both of Mansfield St.Peter's.
