Some playoff spots will go down to final weekend

By Carey Hoffman
Enquirer contributor

It could be a sweep for area teams when it comes to the eight Division I berths available in the region for the Ohio football playoffs.

With one week left in the regular season, computer ratings expert Steve Shuck has Greater Cincinnati teams claiming all eight spots. Friday night's upset victories by Urbana and Oak Hills, two teams that were beaten by Western Hills earlier this season, could be enough to boost Western Hills from No.9 to No.7 in the region.

Western Hills will need a victory over Walnut Hills Friday to earn a playoff spot. The game is one of several locally that will have playoff implications.

Fairfield at Winton Woods is another such game. Fairfield is solidly in the playoffs with a victory, while Winton Woods will be in the running for the region's final berth if it wins.

St. Xavier at Anderson is another key Division I game. St. X could fall out of the region's top four and lose first-round home-field advantage if it loses, while an Anderson loss will have the Redskins battling for the eighth and final spot.

Shuck projects Moeller, Colerain, Elder, St. Xavier and Lebanon filling five of the Division I berths, regardless of what happens this week. He has Fairfield sixth, Western Hills seventh and Anderson eighth.

A long shot that could pay off big is LaSalle. If the Lancers upset Colerain on Friday, they would gain enough points for a realistic shot at a playoff berth.

In Division II, Shuck thinks Edgewood and McNicholas are local teams that should be in the playoffs, win or lose this Friday. Glen Este and Loveland are solidly in with victories, and Talawanda, which plays Edgewood on Friday, still has a solid shot even if it loses this week.

Even Roger Bacon, which has lost five straight games, will be a borderline team with a win over Northwest on Friday.

Wapakoneta, Walnut Hills, Dayton Carroll and Greenville could contend for one of the final two playoff berths in Division II if they win their final games.

The Division III picture is not as crowded with area teams. Undefeated New Richmond looks like it will qualify regardless of the outcome of its game with Williamsburg on Friday. Purcell Marian should be in good shape, but is not a lock, if it beats Mount Healthy this week.

Division IV is complicated. Wyoming should qualify regardless of the result of its game this week against Blanchester. Badin, if it won Saturday night at Dayton Meadowdale, should have a good shot even if it loses to Hamilton Friday.

Madeira should be headed for the No.7 berth in Division IV if it beats winless Lockland Friday.

The battle for the eighth spot could be close. Indian Hill, Mariemont, Clinton-Massie and Finneytown could be in contention, but that's if Indian Hill loses to Glen Este on Friday night. If the Braves win that game, they should be in the playoffs.

The lone area team in Division V that seems headed to the playoffs is Reading, which should have a solid chance regardless of the outcome of its game this Friday against Cincinnati Country Day.

In Division VI, Summit Country Day is projected as a playoff team even if it loses to Mariemont on Friday. Williamsburg, which Shuck had been projecting into the No.8 berth, was hurt Friday night by Mechanicsburg's upset of Milford Center Fairbanks. That could be enough to knock Williamsburg from eighth to ninth, unless it can upset New Richmond this Friday.
