Kirschenbaum, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University, takes on weight loss in The 9 Truths About Weight Loss: The No-Tricks, No-Nonsense Plan for Lifelong Weight Control (Henry Holt and Company, $23). Veggies online: Veggie Patch has an interesting line of vegetarian products, including a few unique products that are also Kosher. The company's Web site (www.veggiepatch.com) has a search feature to locate stores that carry the products, state by state, and also includes links to supermarket sites to request that they stock them. Warren County: Saturday's Fire Hydrant 500 in Lebanon is going to the dogs, literally. It is a 5K run and fitness walk for people only that supports the work of the Humane Association of Warren County Humane Association. Advance registration is closed. Race-day registration is $10, $24 with a shirt. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The race/walk begins at 10 a.m. at the animal shelter on 230 Cook Road. For more information, call 695-1176.
Kenton County: Walking and bending over is exercise, right?
Well then, folks have a chance to exercise and do some community service on Saturday.
Volunteers are asked to show up at 9 a.m. Saturday at General Ormsby Mitchel Park to take part in a countywide cleanup. Gloves, reflective vests and other equipment will be provided for cleanup participants. So will lunch. The project is sponsored by the county's mayor's group. All communities in the county have been encouraged to join in the spirit of the project from 9 a.m. to noon.
On wheels: The Cincinnati Cycle Club will host the 2000 Great Ghost Rider Ramble Bicycle Tour Saturday. The ride begins and ends at East Central High School in St. Leon, Ind.
Ride distances range from 12 to 100 miles. Route maps will be provided. A bicycle rodeo for children 5 and up is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. For information, call the club's ride line at 791-7190 or log onto www.cincinnaticycleclub.org. THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER
