Sophomore John Thinnes scored his first career goal on a headball off a Jeff Sucher corner kick to give LaSalle a 1-0 victory over Fairfield in a sectional championship game Wednesday at Winton Woods High School. Thinnes scored 20 minutes into the contest, and the Lancers' defense did the rest.

        “Thinnes is a basketball player and he is 6-foot-4. We move him up on corners because of his height,” LaSalle coach Pat Albrinck said. “It finally paid off tonight. He was able to out-jump everyone else and put the ball past to goalie on the back post.”

        Kyle Wunderlich sealed the outcome with an outstanding save in the last two minutes. Wunderlich stopped a point-blank shot following a rebound to maintain the shutout.

        • Lakota West 4, Oak Hills 0, Division I sectional at Fairfield — Brian Hubert and Kenney Bertz scored first-half goals to lead Lakota West to the easy victory. Hubert scored 11 minutes into the match off a Matt Fuller direct kick.

        Lakota West will face LaSalle in the district championship at 2p.m. Saturday at Mason.

        • Loveland 5, St. Xavier 2, Division I sectional at Hopewell Elementary — Loveland's speedy front line proved to be too much for the Bombers. The Tigers took a 3-0 halftime lead en route to victory in the first meeting between the schools.

        Jason Boehm opened the scoring 15:08 into the game. Midway through the first half, Matt Bowman and Andy Farrell scored back-to-back goals in a six-minute span to put the game away.

        Bowman and Farrell each added a second-half goal for the Tigers. Loveland will play Lakota East in the district title game at 2p.m. Saturday at Fairfield.

        • Ross 1, Kings 0, Division II sectional at Garfield Elementary — Senior Tiago Carloni scored on a penalty kick with five minutes remaining in the first half to lead Ross.

        The goal proved to be enough behind a tough Rams defense.

        “Our defensive unit is nicknamed "The Wall' and consists of junior Jakes Richards and sophomores Josh Hays and Tyler Roulette,” Ross coach Bill Buelsing said. “They are interchangeable and have a great field presence.”

        Senior Gus Schroeder turned away eight shots for his ninth shutout of the year.

        Ross has outscored opponents 94-9 this season. It will face Indian Hill at 7p.m. Saturday at Lakota West.

        • Indian Hill 2, McNicholas 1, Division II sectional at Amelia — Junior Mike Tuddenham scored both Indian Hill goals, including the game-winner in the second half. With 25 minutes remaining, Tuddenham took a Matt McIntire pass, trapped it with his chest and fired from 18 yards out.

        The sectional championship is Indian Hill's first since 1997.

        • Wyoming 3, Roger Bacon 2, Division II sectional at Lakota West — Drew Kaszubski broke a 2-2 halftime tie with an unassisted goal with 14 minutes remaining. Kaszubski scored twice; Brian Albert accounted for the other goal.

        Wyoming will face Turpin in the district championship game at 7p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Elementary.

        • Turpin 5, Purcell Marian 0, Division II sectional at Sycamore — Mark Burch scored three goals to set a single-season school record for goals with 28. Rob Martella (1989) previously held the record with 27 goals.
