Sophomores Karen Carty and Megan Cappa came up big again for the Fairfield girls soccer team.
For the second consecutive tournament game, Carty scored the winning goal on a penalty kick in a shootout and Cappa made two saves, giving the Indians a 2-1 upset of St. Ursula Thursday night at North College Hill.
The victory gives Fairfield the Division I district championship and catapults the Indians into the regional semifinals against McAuley on Wednesday, also at North College Hill.
St. Ursula was ranked No.1 in the Cincinnati area, No.2 in Ohio and No.17 in the Fox Fab 25 national poll. The Bulldogs finished the season 13-2-4; Fairfield is now 11-4-4.
In a 2-1 victory over Ursuline on Monday, Carty and Cappa did the same thing.
Fairfield junior Katie Chrien was in the net for the Indians during the 100 minutes of regulation and overtime play in both games, but Indians coach Mark Wineberg elected to use Cappa in the shootout.
All the coaches have an input, but it's just a guess as who to play in the shootout, Wineberg said.
Carty's shot was high and to the left of St.Ursula goalie Emily Bohart. There's a lot of pressure. I can't tell you what I was thinking about, Carty said. I just wanted to concentrate and get off a good shot.
Fairfield took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the first overtime on a goal by Ashley Lenhoff. But with three seconds remaining, a Fairfield player deflected the ball into the net off a corner kick.
This bunch of girls doesn't want the season to end, Wineberg said. That's why I wasn't concerned about a letdown after St. Ursula tied the game.
St. Ursula coach Steve Dorr gave Fairfield credit.
They kept plugging and plugging away, Dorr said. We came out in the second half and controlled, but we couldn't put the ball in the net. We just weren't lucky tonight.
Mercy 2, Seton 0, Division I district at Hopewell Elementary Wendy Gamble headed in the deciding goal with 23 minutes remaining in the first half to lead Mercy to the upset over No.1 seed Seton. . Angie Scarlato added the clinching goal with 23 seconds remaining in the game.
We've played in the shadows of Seton all year, but this has been our best season in over 10 years. We came out determined to win, Mercy coach Mike Roth said.
McAuley 3, Lakota East 1, Division I district at Lakota West McAuley, which scored three unanswered goals after Lakota East took a 1-0 lead, claimed its second straight district title.
Badin 4, Mariemont 1, Division II district at Fairfield Reba Sedlacek and Angela Vilkoski each scored twice.
The Rams advance to the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Winton Woods.
Wyoming 3, CCD 2 (OT), Division II district at Sycamore Monica Hoyles scored with five minutes remaining in the second overtime period.
Indian Hill 2, Roger Bacon 1, Division II district at Forest Hills Soccer Stadium Junior Jamie Cowgill scored on a header midway through the first overtime. Indian Hill will play Wyoming in the regional semifinals Wednesday.
