HAMILTON Coby Chavis, accused of fatally shooting a man he said insulted his girlfriend and chased him with a stick, was indicted this week on a charge of aggravated murder by a Butler County grand jury.
Mr. Chavis, 30, is accused of killing Alden Little, 37, on Sept. 12 near Main Street in Hamilton.
Police said Mr. Chavis told them Mr. Chavis and another man insulted his girlfriend as he, his girlfriend and a friend walked in the 300 block of Main Street. A fight ensued, and both men, wielding 4-foot-long sticks, chased the trio.
Mr. Chavis escaped and retrieved a shotgun from his house, two blocks away, police said. He returned to the scene of the fight.
Police said Mr. Chavis told them he felt threatened when Mr. Little approached him, and he shot him at least three times.
The grand jury dismissed a felonious assault charge against Mr. Chavis stemming from a stabbing incident that occurred four days before the shooting.
Rufino Garcia, of Hamilton, had testified in a preliminary court hearing that after he was stabbed at a Hamilton bar, he saw Mr. Chavis waving a knife. But he said he didn't see who stabbed him.
