Would real Miami please stand up?
RedHawks rested, ready for UC
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Miami spent the extra week before the Cincinnati game today trying to get back to being the team that beat Vanderbilt and nearly upset Ohio State, instead of being the one that dropped back-to-back games to Akron and Ball State.
It was a lot like spring practice, Miami coach Terry Hoeppner said. We didn't put anything new in. We went back to basics. We had some real good days with the younger guys. Players like Terrell Jones were playing without the benefit of a lot of coaching. He just had to play.
Jones, a true freshman, was one of the players Miami inserted into the lineup to try to pick up the team.
Beating UC would do a lot to pick up the team. Miami is still in the Mid-American Conference race, but a lot of ifs are involved. Miami will never get to the ifs, if the RedHawks don't start playing better.
The UC game is a chance for that.
The Miami-UC rivalry is the oldest west of the Alleghenies. The Victory Bell is at stake.
But it's about more than tradition, guard Joe Costello said. It's about a football game.
To win, Miami is going to have to be consistent from start to finish.
We performed very well at the beginning of the year at high levels, Hoeppner said.
The week off gave Miami a chance to heal. Top receiver Sly Johnson, who pulled a hip flexor two weeks ago, will start. Costello, who had been playing with impacted wisdom teeth, had them removed during the bye week.
