Boone County 10, Simon Kenton 7

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

Boone County and Simon Kenton thought they were playing for a Class AAAA playoff berth Friday. But as it turned out, neither is going to the postseason.

Boone County won 10-7 on sophomore Steve Swann's field goal with 2:45 left in the third quarter.

And Boone County is staying home because Bryan Station's win over Lexington rival Henry Clay dropped the Rebels into a tie for fourth place with Scott County, which beat them earlier this season. Simon Kenton lost its playoff chance because its dis trict record fell to 2-4.

Boone County sophomore Matt Barber's 1-yard run with 3:10 left in the first quarter capped a 16-play, 82-yard drive. Robbie Flick gained 41 yards on the series.

Simon Kenton didn't need as much time on the ensuing possession: two plays, 76 yards, including senior Daniel Morrison's 71-yard run.

Morrison finished with 134 yards on 24 carries. But that was fine with Boone County coach Rick Thompson. “The rest of their team had minus-13 yards,” he said.

Simon Kenton had one final drive late in the fourth quarter, but two long passes fell incomplete.

Barber finished with 21 carries for 74 yards. Boone County gained 213 yards and held the Pioneers to 182.
