Girls cross country roundup

Colerain takes 4th straight regional title

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

TROY — The Colerain girls cross country team is poised for a fourth consecutive Division I state title.

Led by sophomore Andrea Maas' third-place finish and senior Terie Littlepage's fifth place, the Cardinals won their fourth consecutive Division I regional title to earn a fifth consecutive trip to the state meet, which will be held Saturday at Scioto Downs in Columbus.

Anderson and Turpin also qualified for state in Division I. Kings and Badin earned spots in Division II.

Lindsay Zinn, a Lakota East senior, was the individual Division I winner in 18:17.5. Defending state champion Chelsea Homan of Anderson finished second.

“My strategy is to take the lead and cover the first mile in about 5:30,” Zinn said. “Today I went out in 5:24, but it didn't worry me.”

Zinn was in command after the first mile of the 3.1-mile race. Homan, suffering from a head cold, remained in contact until the final mile.

“There's less pressure this year since I've already won a state title,” Homan said. “I usually run my best race at state.”

        Homan's 14-year-old sister, Jenny, a freshman, was a surprising fourth in personal-best 18:37.

Colerain appeared to be in trouble when its runners were well off the pace after the first mile. But after the second mile, the Cardinals took command.

Maas and Littlepage were the first to move up, with Shelly Dickinson, Alison Bedingfield and Laura Kreuter close behind.

“Collectively, everyone stepped up today,” Colerain coach Ron Russo said.

Turpin, which earned its first state berth, was led by freshman Carolyn Rauen, who finished ninth in 19:18.

Senior Alessa Velez led Kings with a 10th-place finish. Lindsay Keller was 14th and Anna Godby was 17th for the Knights.

“This is my fourth trip to the state meet, but first with the team,” Velez said. “It's been our goal from the get-go and it should more fun with all my teammates.”

        Badin's third-place finish was unexpected.

“We run four sophomores and three freshmen and this is a big surprise,” coach Steve Smith said.

Badin freshman Julianne Hoekzema finished sixth in a personal best 19:28.

Reading sophomore Courtney Engel finished ninth in Division III to earn her second consecutive berth in the state meet.

“I've been fighting a head cold and didn't run well today,” Engel said. “My goal is to finish in the top three next week at state.”

Five Cincinnati-area teams and 10 individual runners qualified for the state meet. (3.1 miles at Troy Memorial Stadium)
