FIT BITS

Ways to stay active and healthy

NUTRITION
Crunch: Popcorn can be a healthy snack for people watching their weight — as long as they watch the fat content and portion size, say the experts at the American Institute for Cancer Research.

The institute's advice: Pick the brand with the lowest fat content that tastes good to you — ideally, your choice should have no more than 3 grams of fat per three- to four-cup serving. Use a measuring cup to control portion size and watch the sodium content.

If you really want to watch your consumption, consider air-popping or the old-fashioned stovetop method instead of microwaveable popcorn.

For more information on healthy recipes and nutrition tips, check the institute's Web site, (www.aicr.org).

GET GOING
Fitvids: Here are some sources for fitness videos:

        • www.videofitness.com (consumers offer their comments on videos; includes links to video retailers)

        • www.foodfit.com (prices are said to be 10 percent less than suggested retail; search under “marketplace”)

        • www.homeworkout.com/videos (”rental program” lets consumers buy videos but receive a full refund if returned to them within three weeks)

        • www.robertsvideos.com (hard-to-find videos)

SHELF HELP
Breast cancer: Two new books add to the knowledge about breast cancer.

        • Breast Fitness (St. Martin's Press, $25.95) reviews research on links between exercise, nutrition, hormones and breast cancer, and presents a health-and-fitness plan for reducing the risk of getting breast cancer.

It was written by three women: Anne McTiernan, M.D., of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Julie Gralow, M.D., director of the University of Washington's Breast Cancer Genetics Clinic, and Lisa Talbott, fitness consultant and co- founder of Team Survivor Northwest, a nonprofit group that helps women cancer survivors maintain health and fitness.

        • Also new this month is “Essential Exercises for Breast Cancer Survivors” ($16.95; Harvard Common Press) by ACE personal trainers Amy Halverstadt and Andrea Leonard.
