Holy Cross wins soccer sectional

By John Schutte
Enquirer contributor

Seniors Jamie Reynolds and Tara Nolan connected on two corner kicks to lead Holy Cross to a 2-1 victory over Harrison County in a sectional title game Monday at Holmes High School.

Holy Cross advances to the state semifinals 6 p.m. Wednesday at Georgetown to face the winner of Woodford County/West Jessamine game. The Indians last advanced to the state semis in 1993. They have never won the title.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead on Nolan's first goal with 25:45 remaining in the first half. Reynolds hit a perfectly placed corner kick on the far post, which Nolan headed in.

“Tara is always there to finish. It seems like she is always in the right spot at the right time,” Reynolds said.

With 21:20 remaining in the half, Harrison County tied the game on a breakaway goal. Megan Scott passed to Jimmie Jo Schmitt who raced unchallenged to the goal. Schmitt beat keeper Stephanie Lea to tie the score 1-1.

Holy Cross reclaimed the lead with 40 seconds remaining in the half on a goal nearly identical to the first.

Reynolds again placed a corner kick on the back post which Nolan headed in.

“I'm always waiting on the backdoor. I was in a crowd, but I managed to head the ball in the top corner,” Nolan said of the game-winning goal.

Holy Cross held the ball on Harrison County's side of the field the majority of the second half, but were unable to score a third time.

“They played six or seven players back on defense at all times, which is hard to score on. That took us out of our game on offense,” Reynolds said.

Nolan's two goals give her 14 for the season, behind Reynolds, who has 27.

Goals: Holy Cross — Nolan 2. Harrison Co — Schmitt. Assists: Holy Cross: Reynolds 2. Records: Holy Cross 19-3, Harrison County 15-5.
