Newport football coach resigns
Newport football coach Roy Lucas Sr. has resigned after five seasons.
Lucas, 59, has been coaching football 35 years. He is 180-120 in 29 years as a head coach, including 44-25 at Newport. He made a career of rebuilding programs, including Newport, an 0-10 program the year before he arrived in 1996.
This year's Wildcats were 2-8, but Lucas said his mind was made up before the season started.
I told (Newport Superintendent Dan) Sullivan this summer this was it, Lucas said.
Lucas will remain as coordinator of Newport High's Youth Services Center.
POHLGEERS COMMITS: Katie Pohlgeers, a 5-foot-11 senior forward for the Beechwood girls basketball team, has verbally commited to Bellarmine College, a NCAA Division II school in Louisville.
As a junior, Pohlgeers averaged 18 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers. She also passed the 1,000-point career scoring mark.
HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN: Villa Madonna senior Kate O'Toole has been named the Kentucky female winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman Program. She is a candidate for the national award, to be announced Dec. 8. O'Toole, a tennis and volleyball player, has a 4.19 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) while also tutoring and doing community service work.
